Maybe somebody can give you a more accurate number that has actually weghed one, but I would guess at 550 lbs complete. Check shipping prices at http://www.freightquote.com and http://www.forwardair.com for some of the better online prices for consumer shipping...Craig

        Weight alone....

is the answer to your question. Freight rates will depend on how the engine is packaged (fully enclosed & stackable vs. lashed to a skid), and how it's prepared/classified. Also, how it's shipped makes a difference.

What's all this mean? Well, some carriers are going to charge you floor to ceiling equivalent cargo space if the engine isn't packed in a STURDY crate they can stack other freight on top of. That makes a PITA carpentry job for the shipper (expect his handling cost to increase)....

Next, if it's a used engine that can fall in a separate cargo category (might have reminants of fuel/oil and take the 'hit' for being classified as a haz mat item). If it's classified as 'new' (from GM factory or a fresh machine shop rebuild that hasn't been run), then it falls in a less expensive freight category.

Last, how the freight is routed has a cost impact. If it's being shipped 'dock to dock' that's your best rate. This means the trucker can simply back his tractor trailer to a loading dock and wheel the cargo on/off. If there's a residential address involved, expect the cost to inflate. Now, they have to worry about someone being there to consign/receive the freight, the truck might have to have a hydraulic lift gate, and some residential addresses restrict big over-the-road truck access (have to sub-contract pickup/delivery to a 3rd party 'hotshot').

Getting a good deal on freight isn't simple and it requires you to know something about what's going on.... About the cheapest you can do is work with one of the forwarding services (like Freightrate.com--GOOD folks) and think about 'punting'. This would be where the shipper drops the item at a local carrier depot and you pickup from the depot on your end (no local action/adders and dock-to-dock is considered a fully commerical vs. residential transaction).

the best and cheapest way to ship a engine is to see a local auto salvage yard that ships engines and have it shipped to another yard if possible.these people are equipted to handle and package the engines for a fee. when i was shipping engines this is the way i did it. the yard on my end was owned by a friend but it will not hurt to check with a salvage yard if you have one near by.

Lyle, I just have to take the bait. Your name is Lyle and you live in Lyle, WA and we have never met. I've only lived in Lyle, WA for 40 years. Maybe we need to get together at the Lyle Tavern, the Lyle Merc, the Lyle Cafe or the Lyle Hotel and say Hi. Best, Dennis. PS Good luck on shipping your block.

              Wrong Direction, Dennis.

              No, Lyle lives in Ohio.

He's getting it shipped FROM Lyle (WA) TO Lyle (whateverhisnumberiseventhoughIknowhislastname) in Ohio.

You likely know who is selling him the engine.

              Clear as mud, right?

I've got no clue if you actually know Lyle of Ohio. He's into 73's, and since in your head they stopped making real Corvettes after 62, maybe you've never met him.

Then again, maybe you have and you're just being silly.

Hey Dennis I'm getting the block from the state of WA. maybe not quite Lyle but the post needed a little flavor. I think we met first at Cypress Gardens when you gave me a top flight ribbon in 1994. As I recall you was a young National team leader at the time. Yes I will take you up on the beer at the Lyle tavern if my rope ever streches that far from home. Could even have that #14 stop buy so we could enjoy his company. Lyle

I am confused. Lyle in Lyle is shipping an engine to Lyle? The only one I know is Lyle is the Diabolical Dipstick Dennis, a white haired rascal of questionable character. Musta been too much Gentleman Jack or Dr. Q's Beast last evening.

A small block weighes somewhere around 500-550 lbs, depending on what is there and which one it is. What accessories still attached changes it also. Then as Jack stated, you need shipping weight, not engine weight. You need the weight of the pallet and the crate around it.

Of course, you have an advantage. You know somone in Lyle, WA. Odds are he is going to Ontario in July.

There is also bound to be someone else in that area headed east to Bloomington in June.

You could just offer them something fair to haul it east for you.

Along those lines, do you know anyone traveling through St. Louis to California with an empty car trailer this year?
