    1984 instrument cluster

Has anyone seen this problem before ? The instrument cluster on my 84 works fine meaning the lights and gauges when the car is cool. As soon as the car warms up the lights go out and won't come on again until it cools off. During this time all the gauges continue to work correctly but no lights on the cluster. I believe it is heat related because if the car sits in a hot garage or in the sun the lights on the cluster will fail to come on when I start the car.

    Steve,

I can only take a guess here as an electronics technician. I have a 62' without all these fancy gadgets.

It sounds to me like your instrument cluster is on a printed circuit board. It is most likely that the thermal expansion of the board is opening up the circuit somewhere. I would suspect it is at the positive supply. I suspect most all of your lamps are turned on by some switch going to ground. Look very closely at your circuit paths on the board for a tiny crack. Use a magnifying light. Run a hot soldering iron over any suspicious areas.

    I hope this helps. John
