Odd 55 Wonderbar Radio item...

55 radio on eBay seems to have what's left of a cardboard cover on it. Is this right? I can see where this would keep dust out, especially since the radio is right behind the air vent, but wouldn't it get hot like that? And be hard to change the tubes?

strange looking and suspect. cardboard sheath definitly not orig to 55 vette. have heard that the packards of the era purchased delco radios for the last of the packards---"-ask the man who ownes one". mike

Dave & Mike,

I had a Packard 6-volt radio converted for my '54 Corvette. Its shape was similar (big & bulky) but had a metal housing with armies of breather holes. The 12-volt radio may have been different, however I doubt it had a fiberboard housing. Been wrong many times though.

Even weirder...

I took another look and even the small details are a dead ringer for the known original Wonderbar in my car. The cardboard cover dosen't look homeade- looks diecut, just beat. My Dad had a radio & tv repair business in the 50s, so he would have done any repair it needed then, but he has passed away and I can't ask him about radio covers.
