    $/lb record on eBay (= a 6.5 million $ fuelie)

Four special long-head S-tube screws for attaching the tube to the rad support on '63-'65 FI air cleaners. I figure they weigh an ounce, hence the "Subject" price on a 3200 lb. car.

The seller's moniker is "hosedagain" (says it all). Click on the link below.

      Guys,

I have reason to believe those screws are incorrect. The original screws had the same head and finish but the end of the screw was self tapping. These are very similar to the 64-65 screw but the originals were driven in at a downward angle and tapped into a small hole in the support.

These screws were taken from the clip on the cable at the power vent on a 64-65 Coupe.

      Buyers Beware,

      Regards,

      JR

        Joe,

I believe you're correct. Also, I hope he doesn't have a 63 or early 64 because that style isn't at all correct for those cars.

            Michael,

Yep! I guess we learned a thing or two on that old judging field. And those who came got their money's worth.

              Joe,

Yes, those were the good old days. (I sound like a geazer) (I am a geezer!) Anyway, yes, the incredible amount of accurate information from unrestored cars is no longer with us. That's too bad because that's where the real info came from.

And while we're on the subject of FI "S" tube screws... I heard reciently that the judging manual calls for "M" head screws for 63 and also states that late 63 had the tall 1/4" head style. Any thoughts on that???

                  Michael,

My thoughts are that the judging manual needs a revisit. Can't remember what the headstamp on the 63 screws was but I believe they were 5/16" heads with no shoulder and very flat. Must have been a bitch to get those into place. Maybe that's why they changed to the 1/4" high hats self tapping somewhere in early 64. Notice I said early 64, not late 63.

                  JR

                    Joe,

I just got off the phone with someone that told me that the manual calls for an "M" head in the 63 early 64 screw. I can't say that there NEVER was an "M" head screw but in 40 years of fooling with these 63 cars, I've never seen anything but "L" head screws. Looks like Jorjorian is in agreement also and I certainly respect his opinion. You are correct on the description of the screw. They were 5/16" washerless head with a slight indentation in the head. They WERE extremely difficult to install quickly so the screw was changed in the early part of the 64 model year, to the design with the tall 1/4" head. This allowed the assembler to drive the screws in with a small socket and extension. I have the early design "L" head screws documented as far as car number 5297, a 64 coupe.

Worse than that, the buyer probably has an early

I've seen another use for simular screws with the long head; they hold the gauges on the back of 69 camaro's dash, and also on 69 and later vettes where the alluminum dash support is held together; Chevy don't waste no screws; I even think that the ones on the camaro are self tapping! I had plenty of these after a camaro resto but have'nt put them side by side with my 65 fuel coupe s-tube screws. David

In the plant, we called those "top hat" screws - used about 40 of them on every Corvair bottom tunnel cover after installing the plastic heater duct in the center tunnel, and another 20 or so for the engine-to-body rubber seal retainer strips on all four sides of the engine compartment. Shoulda kept a couple of pocketfuls of those in 1965....

                            Let's see...

The value of each Corvair just went up by about $1800 if you can remove and resell all the screws to stupid ebay buyers.
