Re: Advice on 66' vette restoration (long)

Go slowly and carefully! If the car is highly original as you say, see if you can have someone from NCRS take a look at it to help you determine what you might want to do with it; i.e. restore it for Top Flight, or keep it original for Bowtie type judging, etc. Avoid shops that don't know much about Corvettes; they will just replace anything not working. Don't throw anything away. Example; it might be better to have an expert (Jerry Luck) work on your old original carb, rather than replacing it with a modern correct replacement.

I once bought a highly original '66 car and at the start I had lots of plans to make everything "better", and new and shiny. For a time the car was stored 180 miles away, out of my reach, and this was good because the local chapter of NCRS educated me about the different judging classes. I decided to leave the car alone for Bowtie judging. Get some good opinions from some experts before you do anything you can't undo!

It all depends what you want to do with your car, drive it , show it or just preserve it. If you want to restore it make sure you geta library on mid years, Nolan's book on 63-37 corvettes is an excellent source as is the NCRS judging manual. Second have a NCRS or qualified person look at you car to determine what is original and what isn't. You may want to keep it a survivor if you think it will pass the judging. Whatever you do with it , enjoy it. Jon Herrick
