C1 ash tray knob

I've bought a repro metal ash tray knob from CC for my '58. It has two cylindrical stubs that match the holes in the ash tray lid. I tried peening them out but seems like the thing is pretty unyielding metal and I'm scared I'll break something or scar up the lid or knob. What is the correct mounting process for this knob? (I've used a dab of epoxy for now...)

Al -

Those cylindrical stubs, hollow on the end, were originally "spin-riveted"; you can't really do that at home, but a reasonable facsimile would be to spread the ends and peen them progressively. Start with a tapered center punch to start the flare, then with a small ball to spread it out, then with a flat punch to peen it flat.

Hi John - Well you described what I would have expected - but these stubs are SOLID and the material is quite hard. I tried hitting it with a pointed punch (1/4") and that didn't phase it. It appears that the repro LOOKs nice, but is not workable in the original fashion due to the material. Oh well at least it is not plastic like what I had! Regards, ...Al '58 245hp

Al, why not try to drill out the stubs with a very fine drill bit hollowing out the stubs and then try the peening process described above? sounds like you have nothing to lose?
