C2 Center Console Removal

On a '67 Corvette... How do you remove the console with the E-Brake handle in the way? I don't want to overstess and break the console by pulling on it too much.

If you can't pull the park brake handle up far enough to clear the back edge of the console plate, back off the under-car park brake adjustment so you can pull the handle up far enough to clear.

Any thoughts of how to polish the console and repaint it.
