    63 Odometer and Trip Odometer

My 63 (January) odometer and trip odometer are inoperative. Are they interchangeable with other mid year odometers. I have one from a 65 that I would like to use, but don't want to tear out the dash unless I am sure it will work. I know the gauges were different in 63, but the odometer units look similar.....

Re: 63 Odometer and Trip Odometer

Odometer and tripometer should be identical for 63 & 65. Often, when this feature function doesn't work it's due to a bad reset cable that's caused the drive gears to mesh improperly (end result is drive gears rip teeth).

The reset cable is spring loaded and by disuse, it can sieze causing it not to return the drive gear to the engaged position or 'partially' return with teeth mis-mesh. Start by removing the reset cable to the tripometer and lube/exercise it so you've got it turning freely and moving in/out between reset and engaged position just as nicely.

Sometimes you can get 'lucky' and save pulling the speedo and overhauling the internals if you catch a failing/sticking reset cable early enough.... Once everything is back up and running REMEMBER to periodically exercise the tripomenter reset function on your car to keep the cable lubricated.

        Re: 63 Odometer/trip Correction

Sorry guys, but the 63-64 speedo and tach frame is not exactly the same as the 65-67. It is in the way they attach to the face. The 63 & 64 are attached by screws and washers and have a indention they must line up with. They are the same as the 65-67 but have some additional machining done. The face on the 65-67 is attached by the two screws that go directly thru the face on either side of the pointer.

You can modify the 65-67 frames to fit the 63-64 with a drill bit of the proper size. This is a job usually left to the professional instrument rebuilders as the unit will nearly always have to be recalibrated.

        Regards,

        JR
