    62 Wonderbar Dimensions

Previous owner cut out the radio location for an aftermarket unit on my '62. I have repaired the fiberglass and need to cut out holes for the outboard radio knobs. Can someone give me the measurements for these (hole diameters and distance between centers). I don't have a Wonderbar to work from.

I'm surprised the dimensions aren't given in your AIM.... But, face of WBar is identical to standard Chevy PB set of the era and many without WBar install these radios for low cost 'tunes' on driver SA cars.

Whoops! Went to laboratory and NO WBar to measure.... Will get you the info tonight from one at home. BUT, you'll want/need more than just shaft OD/bezel dimensions because 'correct' mounting used fixed length support bar between RH side of radio and bottom of upper dash. So, where to position on your center console (up/down) is also an issue. Are you sure the cutout particulars aren't given in your AIM?

The radio from my '61 happens to be out. I measured the opening as 4 1/2"by 2 1/4". The shaft holes were a little "wollered" out but looked like they were probably 1/2" dia with a spacing of about 6 1/4". I wasn't confident of this so I dug out the radio and it measures 4 7/16" by 2 5/32". The shaft OD was 15/32" and the shafts were spaced 6 9/32". The shafts appear to be positioned vertically halfway between the top and bottom of the openning at about 1 3/32". There is a flange or lip on the fiberglass top and sides that is the same thickness as the heater control face plate or about 7/16". I assume it gives a little support as well as for cosmettics. The openning itself is a little rounded, not a sharp/cut openning. A little sanding should provide the rounding. I took Jack's advice & looked at the assembly manual but mine does not show dimensions. You could always use the smaller dimensions that I gave and then sand to fit. Hopefully someone else will confirm the measurements. Good Luck, Doug Flaten

Thanks fellows, I used the heater control face plate to dimension the depth of the mounting area. There may be some sanding needed to fit the vertical dimension between the face plate and the upper dash when I do get a Wonderbar ready to go in. I will recheck my AIM and probably should look at Adam's book to see if there is a drawing of the radio and mounting. If I find published measurements I'll send them out to you and any others who might see a need.

                Confirming

I get 6.25 inches between shaft centers. OD of shaft reinforcements is 0.5 inches (you can go bigger because mount nut and tone/dummy knobs will hide.

Faceplate IS centered between control shafts. I measure 4.5 x 2.2 inches. Top of faceplate to top of chassis is 1.725 inches. Top of chassis to center of RH side mounting reinforcement rod is 1.325 inches.
