Was the vin plate on a 64 coupe attached with rivets, spotwelded, or other method? The 64 that I am looking at has rust in the door jamb area, more specifically where the quarter panel and rear deck attach in the door jamb area. Anyone repaired rust in this area? If so how difficult of a repair. I have restored C3's and have a good shop and tools to do the work. I just do not have any experience with C2's. Any problem areas other than the usual frame rust, body damage etc, on a 64 to look for before purchase? Was a build sheet placed in a 64, and if so where? Thanks!

Re: C2 1964
The VIN plate was attached with special "rosette" head rivets, right next to the trim plate, on the pass side "z brace" under the glove box. I believe that some 1963's were spot welded, but not '64.
There was no build sheet left with the car for 1964. This started in 1967, or very late 1966.
Most common areas for rust are in the areas of the frame end caps, and the areas surrounding body mount #3 (ahead of the rear wheels-esp the back side of the lower kickups). The lower areas of the radiator support, the lower areas of the windshield, and the "birdcage" in the vicinity of mounts 3 and 4, are also prone to rust.

The "ground off paint" now rusted area behind the weld is typical...

Re: C2 1963 VIN attach photo
My old 64 was made on the last day of production (#22220) and a A O Smith body. The trim tag was rivited by A O Smith and mine had "swirrel" marks from a grinder at the factory before the spot welding of the VIN tag. Don H.- Top
