    C2 repo. bumpers?

    Hello all
I was wondering if the reproduction bumpers are of good quality? I have a few bumper cores but they are rusty and bent. Is repo good or should I search for someone who can straighten mine and rechrome them? If anyone knows who I can have this done by, it would be of great help. I did a search on the board but nothing came up. Thanks in advance Mike D #1787

    Re: C2 repo. bumpers?

I called a local chrome shop about a year ago and they told me that their experience with Corvette midyear bumpers had been that they usually need lots of work due to the rust in the corners. I believe that they shot off a price of roughly $400 a bumper to send them back to me looking good, but tempered that with the caution that excessive work could raise the price to as much as $600.

They said they had found most were so thin from rust that repairs had to be made.

Many rechromed bumpers I've seen at swap meets show the tell-tale welding underneath where they have been patched. In some, you could see slight differences on the outside and I'd bet that those welds will one day show through the chrome.

Here in Californis, Bumper Boyz.com or The Bumper Shop (800 831 4421). They will quote you prices outright or with exchange. One of them recently quoted me around $220 for restoring mine including all straightening and repairing, with up to 20% off if the bumper needs only minor repair and re-plating.

Rob - I remember seeing Bumperboyz.com at Carlisle last year, they had many midyear and other years ready for pick up at the show. I didn' really look close since they were wrapped, they had a few demo units there and of course they looked great. Did you use them, or know anyone who has? Their price is cheaper than other platers, and that always worries me about shortcuts and inferior work. My 66 L72 bumpers need work or replacing, fronts are good other than chrome damage, rears have some some damage (bending) on the undersides of the steel but no holes. The plus is they are near rust free, only minor surface rust. I am worried that trading in I may get back a set with lots of interior rust pitting that has been plated over, but the rear bumpers do need some straightening work.....they are certainly closer than the east coast places to Tucson......Craig

          Craig,

I haven't used them, but from my conversation on the phone with them, they seem to understand the different levels of restoration and are willing to restore them to whatever level you want, including removing rust and restoring the insides to original condition. They "talked" a good restoration and sounded like they had the tools needed to correct any bent or otherwise damaged bumpers.

            Re: C2 repo. bumpers?

chevytalk.com had several posts recently from members experience with bomperboyz. As I remember the posts were under the "vendor" section. One should be able to get the information thru a keyword search.
            I hope that helps.
