    differential carrier yoke

Could some one tell me why you should put the side yokes at 90-degrees to each other. even if you do this want they just end up bening the same after awhile of driving?

    Re: differential carrier yoke

Lyndon - there is absolutely no reason to position the side yokes 90 degrees from each other. They will immediately change anyway, when driven, they are designed to move independantly of each other. I am not sure where your thought came from....Craig

I have no idea where the Hayes manual got this idea, but Craig is correct. It makes absolutely no difference how the yokes are phased. Normal differential action due to cornering and slight variance in right/left tire revs per mile will cause the yokes to continuously change phase relative to each other while the car is driven.

Craig and Duke right on---only thing they neglected was to tell ya to put the Hayes manual on the brush pile. mike

In a Chilton an a Haynes Note when removing and installing both axle driveshaftes, be certain to position the carrier side yokes so that the trunnion seats are 90% angles to each other what is the reason behind this?

Don't even bother with Haynes and Chilton books - just buy the GM Chassis Service and Chassis Overhaul Manuals. If you can separate the pages from the binding, the Haynes and Chilton books burn quite nicely

There is NO reason for it whatsoever, which is why you should throw those books away and buy the ones written by the people who designed and built the car.

Mike is right, trash that manual! Get a set of GM service and overhaul manuals published by HELM, repros are available for all years. Also get an AIM, and the NCRS TIM&JG for your year. Haynes, Chilton.....any of those books are just door stops and kindling.... Craig

This makes no sense at all, what year, book, and section says this? Even if it says this, there is no reason to do it....I can understand maybe putting a used yoke back in the same side it came out of due to it's contact face being seated in on the cross pin, but even that is probably not a big deal, just a good practice, but aligning the yokes with each other makes zero sense.....Craig

John - agreed. What I am curious about is Lyndon states the GM Helm book says the same thing, I have NEVER seen this in any of mine, so I am wondering what year his books are for. Even if it does say this, it is wrong.....Craig

Lyndon is right, the statement is in HELM

too, on my 67 Chassis manual it is on page 4-34. I stand corrected that the GM manuals don't say this, but there is still no reason to do it.....Craig
