    Re: differential carrier yoke

Duke- I found the same information in my 67 GM Chassis service guide on page 4-34 after Lyndon noted below his 71 Helm had the same statement. It still makes no sense at all, I attribute it to and editing faux pas(u) in the writing of the manual.....Craig

      Re: differential carrier yoke

Well, if that's what it says in the CSM or COM, we need to hunt down the dolt that wrote that sentence and give him 40 lashes with a repro '67 antenna

Plus....it must have been written once,

and carried forward without ever being screened again......guess I should look it the latest CSM I have which is 77 and see if it still stated the same.....bet it did, written once, proofed never... LOL. Craig

            Re: differential carrier yoke

I remember reading somewhere that this recommendation was made to allow easier installation of the diff housing into the cavity, perhaps a specific situation where the half shafts etc. had not been removed.

Other than that it would make no sense.

Mike - that analogy may make some sense, but as I read the statement in the context of the CSM on page 4-34 in section 4, it mentions this after the halfhaft u-bolts (or caps in the case of the BB) are connected to the carrier yokes. So, at least in this case, it was after the installation....so it seems to be an error in the manual that carried forward at least from 67 on through 71, probably is in all CSM's...Craig

                Re: differential carrier yoke

Maybe if was the same dolt who never placed anything in any of the service manuals about orienting the distributor drive gear dimple in the same direction as the rotor tip. This caused no end of problems over the years and continues to this day.

Ah well, (sigh) I guess the only explanation is "different yolks for differnt folks!"

But Chilton, Haynes, and Motor just copied GM

You know that Chilton, Motor, Clymer, and Haynes just copy the factory manuals and do some combining to get several years instead of one.

The only thing about the C, M, C, and H is that occasionally they will give a shortcut or a tip on how to do it easier.

Chevrolet obviously never cared about easier. Otherwise, the "dolt" who designed the trailing arm bolts to be under the body panels would have been fired and the design changed. It didn't, 1963 to 1982. In fact, it got worse, when they put the angle braces in at an angle that made disassembly on the car even more time-consuming. They could have least moved the brake block brackets, but no, they planted them right square in the middle of where you need to go!

They made lots of changes each year, so don't say it would have cost too much to change. Simply not putting body panels that covered the bolt or having the brackets weld in at a different angle would have helped a lot.

Don't even get me started on other Chevy "engineering" practices.
