    C1 - Steering box

    Gents,
Just getting ready to lower the body back down on a 57 and need to know at what point does the steering box / steering column need to be reinstalled or can it be done after the body is set down .

Myles - You need to do the steering box/column install before you drop the body on the frame. This applies, I believe, to 53 - 57... Best, Dennis

Not sure about your year. On 58-60 you need to install the column AS you lower the body.

I believe Joe Calcagno in SoCal can probably help out on a rebuild, though you may be able to tackle the job yourself. Remember, there is an adjustment on these steering boxes that may take care of nominal wear. That adjustment needs to be done with caution while the front wheels are centered. I guess what I mean is, little adjustments, or you will simply bind up the steering gears. Best, Dennis

Larry, It is my belief, you can R&R a 58/62 steering column any time you want with the body on or off the frame. DC

              Dennis,
Is that with the column attached to the box and the engine in place?

Larry - On 58/62 - yes. Remove steering wheel & hub. LH exhaust manifold will likely have to be removed, along w/expansion tank if so equipped. You cannot do this on 53/57 because column is captured by the dash hole the column goes through. On 58/62, you simply remove the lower dash column support, lower and rotate the column up and out of the engine compartment. Hope I've explained this in a reasonable manner. Best, DC
