Hi, can any body comment on the correct color and shape of window crank knobs for 68 corvette. Were clear knobs ever used? Were the knobs the same color as the interior? Was there an early and a late version? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Window crank knobs for 68?
Terry----
For 1968 the window crank handle knobs were "color-keyed" to the interior color. As far as I know, there was only 1 "version" of these handle/knob assemblies used for 1968. The general configuration of the knobs is very similar to the 69+ knobs and those still available in SERVICE to this day. However, there are are some very slight differences between the configuration of original knobs, both the colored and black variety, from current day knobs. It practically takes a magnifying glass to discern the differences, though, and I'm not going to get into it here.
The 68 handle/knob assemblies were different than the 67. For one thing, most of the colors were different. For another thing, the configuration of the zinc diecast portion of the assembly was different between 67 and 68. Not hugely different, but different.
Also, the configuration of later and even current day SERVICE replacement handles with respect to the configuration of the zinc diecast portion of the assembly is different than the originals. This difference is easy to discern if you compare and original and replacement handle assembly side-by-side. The method of attachment of the knob to the arm is different in later handle assemblies, too, (which is a VAST improvement over the originals) but it is difficult to discern this difference with the handle installed in the car.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Window crank knobs for 68?
I made the post because my car has a blue interior and I found black window crank knobs in it. I also read the preveous posts about the 67 corvette window cranks with the weird shaped knob. I have a real nice blue set of those. I was told that the early 68 cars had some 67 window cranks by a person that has sold corvette parts for years. I would like to find a set of 68 blue knobs that are original. I will start shaking the trees and see what falls out. If you know of anyone parting out a dark blue car, let me know. Thanks for your responce, Terry- Top

I think that the configuration of the REAR of the 1967 knob may have been unique to 1967. I don't think that this exact style was carried over to 1968.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

It's very possible that early 1968 Corvettes used 67 window crank handles. Certainly, the 67 style handles would fit and function just fine on a 1968. However, there's no DOCUMENTATION that I know of for this if it did happen. Without that and since these handles are often replaced it would be very hard, I'm sure, to establish that the handles were original to the car. I would say that if the handles on both sides were IDENTICAL, that would advance the argument that they were original to the car. Whether that would "cut any ice" as far as judging is concerned I don't know.
As far as the black window crank handles in your car, they could easily be SERVICE replacements. The 68 style colored knob handles were discontinued a LONG time ago and replaced, for SERVICE, by the black. What is the CASTING NUMBER(S) on the rear of the zinc-diecast portion of each of the handles? In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Window crank knobs for 68?
Wow thanks Joe, I have found the 67 handles in other GM models at the junk yard, but they are few and far between. Plenty of post 67, I guess I'll have to find me a teal pair, and hope for a shark owner with a big wallet.

Re: Window crank knobs for 68?
I think I sold them a while back. I might have to hit an old chevrolet junk yard. Except, most passenger cars seem to have clear knobs. Is there any chance you know the correct part number for the 68 knobs. I heard paragon had an inventory of nos. Probably want my left nut for them. Terry- Top

I'm afraid that it won't be that easy unless you find some 67 Corvettes in wrecking yards. The 1967 Corvette window crank handles were unique to Corvette. How they differed from the passenger car handles, some of which were colored, too, I don't know. I expect that it had something to do with the length/curvature of the shank of the handle. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

These numbers will absolutely NOT be cast into the back of the zinc-diecast portion of the handle. The zinc-diecast portion of the handle is common to all 1968 Corvette window crank handles. It may also have been used for other applications, as well. Offhand, I don't know what the number is, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
