    Dash Cluster Compasitor 1961

Could someone please provide information on what terminals that capacitor # 7270568 5MFD 200V.D.C connect to under a 1961 dash cluster?

    Thanks!

Ray - Here' s half the answer...

One lead goes to ground at the dash cluster. The AIM, RPO radio section should tell you which ampmeter hot post the other lead goes to. I'll guess it may not make a big difference, but may as well do it according to the General...

And always remove yer watch when working under the dash. Watch bands will burn into skin before the band melts. Don't ask how I know.

I always disconnect the battery before working under the dash. Ya know those circuit breakers on the firewall the cars with power tops and windows have? The distance betwen them and the top ignition shielding is just about the same distance as the circumfrence of a watch band. Both the terminals on the top of those little suckers are HOT!! How do I know this? Don't ask. Ever seen a Rolex with the links of the band welded together?

              Ray...

The brown paper capacitor as a "black band" on one end that should face the gauge case ground...just a note that tha AIM left out.

                Thanks! Dennis

I understand that the black band end attaches to the dash cluster for the ground and the other end attaches to the gauge.

                Thanks again!

Couldn't afford a Rolex when I was 17, but my Bulova band burned into my arm (wear the scar to this day 42 years later) before it melted and fell off. Hung it over the B+ terminal on the back of the ignition switch.

I was changing a ballast resistor. The ignition was off, of course, but the CB is hot all the time. At the time I really didn't even know what it was for. My scars have almost healed, many years later, but the watch is still toast!

                      Add-on....

Sophmore year in college brought me to Electrical Engineering Circuit Labs 101. The first lab project was rather mundane-connect two resistors in series and measure/prove Kirchoff's Law (driving source voltage is divided between the two resistors based on relative resistance and the sum of voltage around the circuit = zero).

The students talked before the lab prof arrived chuckling at what a 'simpleton' exercise this was. Prof arrived and started with a safety lecture. It included:

                      (1) Remove all jewlery including watches, bracelets, rings and loose fitting metalic neckware--bascially ANYTHING that could accidentally make contact with an active circuit element.

                      (2) When working, put one hand in your pocket until you NEED the use of two hands.

                      (3) Eventhough you know your fellow lab partners, keep a weather eye out at all times to insure you have/maintain a separation distance from your fellow students.

Again, we were very confused by what appeared to be OVERKILL for this simple lab experiment. The professor then proceeded to a wall in the lab, took out a key and unlocked the massive wooden door covering part of the wall. He announced this was where we'd get our 'battery' voltage from for today's lab experiment as he slid the wooden door aside....

In HUGE letters was a warning surrounding the fourty or so 1.5-inch circular brass bannana jack recepticals that read: CAUTION LIVE 880 VAC THREE PHASE. Yes, all the good little students began to dutifully shed any/all jewlery, stuck one hand in their pockets and measured their safety margin distance from adjacent students....
