    '57 2x4 manifold question

My '57 continues with a serious skipping problem. Yesterday I checked which cylinders weren't firing by swapping around ignition wires, etc. The answer was perhaps a tip to the nature of the problem. All the misfiring cylinders are on the left side of the engine! Could this be due to the intake manifold plenum design? I assume four cylinders are supplied by one carburetor barrel and the other side of the engine by the other barrel of the carb.

Is the design of the aluminum manifold like this? If it is, it could be pointing at the carburetor as the culprit.

    Thx,

    Michael

I would be looking at the intake gaskets between the manifold and head. A friend of mine had that with his 58 and the guy that screwed the engine together hadn't tightened the bolts up.

      Michael,
Do not assume this! The 2 X 4 manifold below the carburetors is a big mixing area. The carb just dumps air and gas into this area and it is the intake valve which determines which mixture goes where. Robert's suggestion is a good one. I believe with the car idleing try waving a Burnzamatic tourch (not lit) around the intake ports (particularly the underside). If the engine speeds up, you've found a vacuum leak. Regards,
