Rear Axle Oil

Fellow members: My 1989 calls for 80W-90 GL-5 rear axle oil. I tried to obtain some from my local GM dealer. They only use/sell GL-4 and that it is ok. Despite what I am being told, I am hesitant to stray from the recommended fluid. I therefore plan to go for a non-GM product that meets GL-5 specs. Any comments?

GL-4 is not suitable for axles - manual transmissions only. Axles need GL-5. You can purchase any 80W-90 GL-5 at an auto parts store. If you are changing the oil add one 4-oz. bottle of of GM of Positraction additive.

The dealer really does have GL-5 axle oil, but it's just called axle oil and the product information may not include the GL-5 identifier.

Ask your dealer for some GM #1052271 (if he still has any) or GM #89021671 gear lubricant. Either of these are the EXACT lubricant which GM recommends for your application regardless of what else it may say on the actual container.
