I'm having a difficult time getting a 54 to run properly - lots of black exhaust fumes/poor power/rough idle. The owner says the car was running fine before he put it up for storage. I tried checking the ignition timing and there is no mark visible on the balancer. What is the correct initial adavance (I'll find TDC manually and re-mark the balancer)? What is the correct procedure for adjusting the secondary circuits on the carbs?

Re: Adjusting Carburetors on a 54
Mike:
I am, absolutely no expert on early 6 cylinder Corvettes, but I would go after the PRIMARY carburetor as suspect. If the engine idles poorly, then the main culprit would be a dirty/deteriorated float needle valve (replace with a Delron unit). I am sure that there are other possibilities, but why look at the timing map if the engine ran okay before layup?

Re: Adjusting Carburetors on a 54
I've wrote a post using Carter Zip Kit #902-118 which is a Turbo Corvair rebuilt kit. The Corvair Carb is the same as your Corvette Carb but uses a rubber nose needle which keeps the Carbs from leaking and running to rich. Your needles may be shellacked form the gas being old. Your Carbs have no secondary circuit You bend the metering rod support.- Top
