    Oil...Again?

Duke Williams provided some very good information on oil to use in our older engines. Specifically, he talked about such major national brands of CI-4 oil as Chevron Delo, Shell Rotella, and Mobile Delvac. I agree wholeheartedly with his recommendations and use the CI-4 oil in my car. But, I've been recently assaulted with data on Amsoil which makes it sound like the panacea to everything.

Any comments, other than cost, of using Amsoil (a synthetic) versus the CI-4 fossil oils in our engines?

    Lenn,

Regards Amsoil.... if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

      Ahhhhhhh, the sounds of silence-

      Thankfully.

There's plenty of ad nauseum discussion on the 'other' boards about oils and whether brand 'A' or 'B' is better because they either 1) taste great or 2) are less filling.

In the real world, any brand name oil (of any type) will allow your engine to go at least 100K miles (probably 150K) between overhauls. At the rate we use these cars, most of us will be having a permanent dirt nap long before the engines wear out. My car will be at least 90 years old when the next overhaul is due, so I'll let the great grandkids fund that from their own pocket.

I've had a standing offer for years asking for real verified 'proof' of an engine that lasted longer solely because of synthetic oils. I've had no takers so far.

There is a forum - bobistheoilguy.com - that is to oil as we are to Corvettes. There are proponents of all sorts of oils and elixirs there. Lurk for a while, and have some fun. I doubt you'll get a definitive answer, but you may learn more about oil than you want to know.

My 'working' life has already taught me more about brand A vs. brand B engine oil comparisons than I'd ever care to know about. That's why my offer is a pretty safe bet (for me).
