I noticed in the latest Driveline, #157-page 15, that there is a 1970 LT1 engine for sale with the VIN stamped on the bellhousing flange above the oil filter with NO VIN stamped on the pad. The engine is out of #70S400210.

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
Brian, I saw that too, it made me think of the thread last week here.....I didn't even realize this practice was done until Terry mentioned it.....I had read in books this was an alternate stamping location, but didn't think it had been done on any vettes....Craig- Top

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
It is in the third edition of the 1970-1972 TIM&JG, but if one doesn't own one of those cars there is no reason for one to see it. If Tom Russo is right there are some 1978s as well. Besides these systemic variations, the purpose of the alternate location was for use if the VIN derivative was unable to be clearly stamped on the pad. That could mean that there are some engines out there that had the VIN derivative stamped so ugly on the pad that they then hit the alternate location. I have never seen one, but that doesn't mean too much.
BTW & FWIW: If you are interested in other Chevrolet products besides Corvettes they occasionally use the alternate location for the VIN derivative. Some Chevelles used it, and my 1978 Suburban BB has it on a machined boss dead above the timing cover.Terry- Top

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
Many 1969 Camaros from Norwood and Van Nuys also used the "above the oil filter" location as the "normal" VIN derivative location (most of which are almost totally illegible due to the as-cast surface they were stamped on).- Top

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
If I'm correct, '69 Z/28s with the 302s used this location. Also saw last year(may have been two years ago)at either a Chapter meet in Pa or Md, I saw a super low mile '78 S/A that had this "alternate" VIN location above the oil filter boss.- Top

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
Yep, I've seen them on Chevelles and knew about those 10 years ago at least. I did not know about possibly Corvettes until the recent group of threads.

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
Not true! Last year I owned 1969 Camaro serial number #32 made first week of August 1968 at Van Nuys. Car was a 210 horse 327 with the Vin stamped by the oil filter. This was an original 2 owner car with the first family owning this car until 1999.
Never say never!

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
Mike:
You need to re-read my post!
I said after 01/01/69, prior to that the stamping was done at both locations, sporadically. The assembly line determined that it took too much time to move alternator for the stamping process and started to stamp all engines at this plant, down by the alternate location. Read the research done by the USCC (United States Camaro Club).- Top

Re: C3 Alternative Stamp Location
Not to get into a major discussion however you said "after 1/69 the VIn was stamped by the oil filter boss in Van Nuys Ca. as well". You did not mention anything about stamping in both places.
At least "I" saw nothing mentioning the US Camaro club information you mention in you last post.
Have a great day!
