67 NOS BB Hood 4-2-7 numbers.

I have an NOS 67 BB hood which has recently been painted Marina Blue/Black and is not yet installed back on the car. This morning I was going to try to install the "427" numbers on each side of the hood. Two questions: How can I keep from damaging the paint(both sides)while drilling the holes? Is there a template that can be used to drill the holes in the right places? Getting the numbers perfectly straight does not look easy as the holes will be staggered. Any help in this regard would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds a little tough. Any chance you know someone with n original from which you could make a paper template? I don't think drilling the holes is too big a deal, since the emblems are at least a shade bigger than the holes. Wouldn't want to make any large chips though.

I have never installed the 427 numbers, but have drilled holes to mount emblems before. The best case would be if you could get an NCRS member with an original hood with the emblem holes in it to trace you a template off their hood and send it to you. At the very least, I would want to get mounting and spacing dimensions.

If a correct template can't be found, you should at least make a mock up because of the offset pins. I will describe the lowest tech possible way of doing this. If you have better tools or materials available to you, great, but this will work.

Get an old cereal or shoe box, a ruler, some tape, and a sharp pencil. Cut 3 squares out of the box. Make each side of the square about an inch longer than the size of the individual number.

Position the 4 in the center of one of the squares and press it on the cardboard hard enough for the mounting pins to leave a mark. Carefully use the sharp pencil to poke a small hole where the pins marked and "mount" the emblem on the cardboard square. Do the same thing for the 2 and the 7.

When these three letters are mounted on their individual squares, use the ruler to justify the tops and bottoms of the first two metal numbers. Even and correct their spacing.

When you are satisfied with the spacing, carefully tape together the two cardboard squares the numbers are mounted to. Repeat this for the third number. When you are finished, all the numbers should be straight and evenly spaced on a taped together cardboard backing.

Use the ruler and trim down the taped together squares at the tops and bottoms of the numbers. Remove the numbers from the squares, making sure they stay securely taped together. Trace the taped together backing onto a nice clean piece of cardboard from the box and carefully transfer the mounting hole locations to the new solid template.

Mount the numbers to the new template to check the spacing. Trace the numbers onto the template so you can visualize them easier when using the template. Now you can use the template to mark mounting holes wherever you want the numbers to go. As long as the template is on straight, the numbers will be straight and evenly spaced.

As far as protecting the paint, I would cover the area with good quality masking tape and be sure to use a sharp drill bit.

      Good Luck, Shane

I looked through Adams' Tech Guide and on p.415 is a copy of a drawing (looks like an assembly manual dwg) of the numbers aligning to the hood. The bottom and top edges of these numbers line up which you probably figured out for yourself. Unfortunately, it doesn't give dimensions but there is a closeup of actual numbers above this. You could measure these and compare them to the actual letters to obtain a scale. This would give you the spacing BETWEEN the numbers but it still wouldn't give you the distance from the bottom of the scoop to the bottom of the letters or the leading edge of the "4" and the front tip of the scoop. You could look at the other photos and guesstimate where they should go. If any judge out there actually measures the placement of these numbers, then he should get a life! A template can be made using some stiff paper. You want to re-create the shape of the side of the scoop, natch. Feather the edge of the paper so you don't scratch the paint. After you have a template that matches the scoop, remove the template from the hood, line the numbers up on the template, and punch the number mounting points through the template. Now you have something to mark the holes for drilling. One template should work for both sides. Make sure the paint has hardened before you push the numbers in. Good luck!

                Lower 7

                Rick,

I don't know if this picture will show up, but here goes. I took this picture at the nationals last year of a set of numbers after someone pointed out to me that the 7 on originl hoods were approximately 1/32" lower than the 4 and 2. Nit picky, yes, but supposedly the way it was.

My original hood is off the car, in primer and without numbers. If you can wait a few days, I'll make you a template.

                  That worked well...

Can someone explain to me (slow learner) how to post this pic?
