    1966 Ohio license plates

Would anyone be able to provide insight to the letter/number sequence of the 1966 Ohio license plates. I have seen different letter/number sequences some have four numbers followed by two letters and visversa. Did the sequence have anything to do with the region, ie. Southern,Western,Eastern or Northern that the car was sold or registed when new? I'm especially interested to know whether there was any special sequence for the Akron area.

Russell, this is going way back, but I believe for Hamilton County (Cincinnati), 1966 license plates were two letters followed by four numbers...gray with red characters. I can't remember noticing any that were not that format, and therefore know of no geographic variation.

Go to ebay and search for "1966 Ohio License". There are a half dozen for sale. It looks like the standard was two letters and four numbers, but of course they could be anything with a vanity plate.

I am sure someone on the Yahoo plates page can answer your question. I ask about the different types of 1971 Ohio plates and got back 2 pages of details. There web address is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PLATES

          Russell,

My 1966 Corvette was bought by the 1st owner in Columbus, Ohio in August of 1966 and the original Ohio license plate number was RU617. I don't know if this information will help, but I thought I'd pass it along.

            P.S.

Curiosity caused me to do a little research on the net: It appears I completely missed the colors (inversed?) since 1966 Ohio plates were red with white characters. My memory of letters and numbers is probably just as reliable. Sorry for wasting your time.

I found out today that there is a certain sequence to the letter/number of the 1966 Ohio license plate. Apparently, Akron which is in Summit County, Ohio used the sequence of A1A to E999R on the plates issued during the 1966 model year. This makes sense because the original owner of my 66' stated his plate was A327Y. Now all I need to do is find a pair of plates with that sequence.

Russell, I ran across a website for an outfit that will emboss any plate you want. See link below.
