Safe lifting point underneath for motor? (62-340)

Well, the shop put me off for a week to get the car looked at, so I'm tempted to have a look at the WP myself (If I bugger it, it'll flatbed to the pro nicely). The PO says the front motor mount had been 'patched up' and may have a low spot..... New front mount plate (GM # 3786779) is $50, best to just get a new one? (My bias is yes.)
Dumb question: Is there a preferred jacking spot under the motor to take the weight off the motor mount, or some sort of dolly/crib to build? I'd hate to mess up the oil pan doing this incorrectly. Thanks for the help!

    Rob -

I made this "pan saddle" a long time ago just for that purpose, and have used it many times since; it lifts the back of the engine on the pan rail, not on the pan surface. The base piece to jack on is a 2x6, and the sides are 1x6; the sides sit on top of the base, and are attached with three or four 4" screws each. It snugs against the sides of the pan, and the sides are about 1" taller to the base than the depth of the pan. The notch is for clearance to the dipstick "bump". Works great, won't damage that irreplaceable oil pan. Any tool that costs less than a dollar is a good thing

        John,
Looks like an undiscovered Picasso line-drawing on the inside panel.
Seriously, a nice solution like usual.
