    fouled plug

I have a 327 with 2 fours, i just fouled a plug.I am trying to determine the cause.I have good compresion and a vacume of about 16-17 the engine seams to run a little rough (altho i have a small cam in it). I have been thru the basics with the points wires ect.the engine dosen't smoke and runs pretty good, What i wondering, if the intake manifold could be leaking thru two of the intake ports at the heads where the gasket is, and sucking fuel from one cylender to the other,or sucking oil from someware other than the rings or valves, because the plug beside the one that keeps turning black is white. none of the plugs seem to be a consistant color.Any help would be nice

What heat range plugs are you running? If it's 43's, try 44's if you can find them or even better, 45's. Your problem could be a simple as running too cold a plug.

      Lee:

How long has this been happening? Have you recently changed anything which may have caused the problem? Do you have any reason to suspect the intake gasket? Give us more background info.
With the info provided so far, it sounds to me like a problem in the carb synchronization. If you pull all 8 plugs, lay them out as they sat in the engine, and describe the color of each, that will give a clearer picture. (right bank, front to back: 2 4 6 8; left bank, front to back 1 3 5 7).
I think that by changing to a different (hotter) heat range, you will not solve a mixture/fuel distribution problem.
Did the engine always run rough? Maybe you should rebuild your carburetors.

I am going to run the car again and recheck them. this is the first time this happened. The engine was redone some time ago, it was installed 2 years ago and only has a few thousand miles on it.I have alot of mechanical skills, but haven't delt with 2-4 setups, i hear the old ones are a lot of trouble, but i am up to the chalange. when i first puled the plugs the 2 cyl was black the 4 was real! light and the 6-8 looked pretty good. I am not shure but i think the 1 was ok ,3 was a little darker 5 was light!, and 7 was ok.This is why i am leaning towards the intake or the carbs. I did a compresion check, looked at the valve seals, reajusted the valves, switched the wires, adjusted the points (duel)and set the timing. With no consistancy in the plugs this leades me to beleave the carbs or the manifold is the problem. I was hoping someone has delt with the 2-4 set up and could help.

You may wont to pull and check the metering rods, you may have a "mixing" , left side smaller then the thicker right side.??????????seen this before!!Then find the correct metering rods for your HP.
