    Goodyear Tires

My 1974 Coupe currently has RWL, Cooper Pro 70 Radial Tires on it, P225/70R15. The spare is a blakwall Goodyear Eagle RS-A, P225/70R15 (mounted inside out based on the directions given on the tire). I do not know what tire version the car was built with.

I'm looking to replace these tires with hopes of accomplishing three objectives (realizing that some compromising will be necessary). First, I'm looking to install the closest replacement Goodyear tire to the original on the car, two, to whittle away at the 21 points that I lost on tire originality, and three, to install a tire that will not overly compromise the safety and handling of the car.

I'm interested in hearing from members who've had some experience with tire purchases having similar objectives in mind. What tire is the closest replacement to the original? Any thoughts on where it might be purchased? Which tire would provide the best compromise between points and handling? Suggestions/recommendations?

    Re: Goodyear Tires

    Ray,
I can't help much with your tire question as I have little experience with your tire requirements.
I can, however, tell you not to worry about the directional mounting of the RS-A spare. The tread pattern is asymmetrical, and the directions are to mount the more aggressive portion of the tread to the inside of the car for noise reduction purposes.
I hope someone else can help you with your basic question
    Terry

      Ray,

Short of invoking the Wrath of Duke for giving bad tire recommendations, I'll note my thoughts on at least part of your question.

Unless you have identical reproductions of your origials, virtually any modern Goodyear tire will lose some points. What I would do is search the Tire Rack under your size as well as under Goodyear, and then read the reviews. I find the huge number of survey responses on that site to be very useful. Find the white letter or white stripe tire that seems to match your requirements. Given equal choices, I'd take handling (didya hear that, Duke? )

I jsut ran a search, and there isn't a lot offered, especially if you want any type of speed rating. There are only 6 in your size, and you'll have to choose from there.

        Re: Goodyear Tires

The V-rated GY Eagle RSA is on of the three available "police pursuit tires" that are available in the 225/70R-15, so it should minimize the point loss, but it's only available in blackwall.

The General XP2000V4 is equivalent, and is available in blackwall or narrow whitewall.

As long as you are okay with blackwalls, the RSA should minimize the deduction, and you already have one as a spare.
