    Shelf life of lubricants

What is the shelf life of crankcase oils, both natural and synthetic? I buy in quantity and some of my cache is 3+ years old.

    Thx,

    Mike

It's basically indefinite. The only thing is that you may end up using oil that has been superceeded in specification. The current API spec for spark ignition motor oil is SL, but if some of yours is older than three years is may be the prior SH spec.

Not big deal, go ahead and use it.

Shelf life really depends upon storage conditions. I've sold lubricants for a major manufacturer for over 20 years. Our stated life for most compounded oils is 5 years and greases is 2-5 years. I can e-mail a technical bulletin to you if interested.

      Greg.
