Remove fan shrouds for WP R/R? ('62-340)

Just by looking it seems I'd have a lot more space to get at the WP and that lovely tower clamp on the lower rad hose by pulling the shrouds. Is this necessary, or can I proceed without doing so? Thanks for the suggestions-

Other question- when jacking up the motor to remove the front motor mount, where is the upward deflection of the motor stressing the engine/tranny assembly? I presume I only need to support the weight of the engine, and not really 'lift' it more than a fraction of an inch, but I'm paranoid about cracking a manifold, bellhousing, tranny case, etc.

Actually, you can take the water pump out by using the following process, remove the upper waterpump bolts (one on each side of the engine) and replace them with a longer bolt that you have cut the head off from. screw these into place of the removed bolts. Then remove the lower bolts and slide the water pump off the headless bolts you installed. These will serve to support the engine on the front brace until you get your repaired water pump back. Used this on my '62 after a WP problem and it worked fine

Agree w/Bill & you might also...

... hack saw a slot in the bolt with no hex anymore - this allows an easier in and out screwing. Sorry, let me reword that...

        Dennis,

I do agree with the procedure but this won't allow you to inspect the surfaces behind the motor mount brace (on the brace and engine). If these are not completely flat you risk leaking when finished.

Dipstick, does one need to give the bolt Viagra?
