C2 Cam Plug Oil Leak

I think the cam plug at the back end of my engine is leaking oil, and would like to change it to eliminate my suspicions. The engine is fully assembled and in the car, but I have removed the flywheel, clutch, transmission etc. Has anyone tried to change the plug without removing the camshaft? If so can you tell me how to approach it. I have changed freeze out plugs, but they don't have a camshaft in the way. I appreciate any tips or advice on how to proceed with this little chore.

before tackling the cam's freeze plug, be certain it isn't the rear main seal. if it is the soft plug,i did replace one once without removing the cam. simply drove a stout sharp ice pick thru the plug then used the cam to pry the plug ou. be sure to thoroughly clean any metal debris before installing new soft plug. use permatex to seal the new plug. mike

Thank you for the quick response. I had wiped everythink clean with a shop solvent and just went back and loooked again, about an hour later there is a definate weeping at that plug. I hope that is something I can get locally at the parts store, and not have to order it. Do you recall how close the cam is to the plug face?

George - I am not sure how close the cam is to the plug, probably withing .125 or so. Another possible but costly way to proceed, if you have a use for a stud welder gun working on steel bodied cars, is to use this Eastwood tool to weld a stud on the plug and slide hammer it off like a dent......Craig

I got the old plug out and found a new picked up a new one today at NAPA. Thanks for the tips, Iit came out pretty easily and am ready to install the new one.
I bought a tube of Permatex, because the package said for block plugs. When I got it home and read the instructions this is definately not the right stuff, it is for sealing threads. Can anyone tell me the right permatex to buy? I really don't ewant to do this twice.
