First time Corvette owner with the purchase of a numbers matching (and documented for it's first 48k miles) 78 SA although it has some serious engine problems. How crucial is it to keep this a numbers matching car? My original thoughts were to transform this car into a very respectable street machine just short of show condition. Should I continue with this plan?

Re: Matching numbers question
Since this is an original numbers matching Corvette, I would do everything possible to keep it that way. Even though it has engine problems, I would rebuild the original unit without removing (decking) critical numbers. If the engine is replaced, the car loses it's originality. Modifying the car to street machine status will depreciate it's value.- Top

Re: Matching numbers question
Bob, I'm all for doing with your Corvette what you really want - but I also believe that, if possible, you should try to keep the car such that it can be returned to an original state. If you have your heart set on a hotter engine and the correct engine needs work, why not pull the correct engine and tuck it away so its available if there is ever a desire to return the car to original condition? Re: Matching numbers question
Look for a donner power plant and keep the original under your bench even in it's current condition.
I was able to easily locate a complete four bolt main 350 for around $100.00 and plan to put my rebuild monies into it instead of the original 327.
Now if I lunch the power plant, I'll only grimmice a little instead of having a nervous break down
