I have some kind of black undercoating on the underside of my hood. Is this factory? It smudges if I try to wipe it off with a rag, looks like it would be a pain to remove it all.

Re: '72 underside hood
Tony, the factory applied a low-gloss black paint to the underside of the hood.
I wouldn't expect any paint or undercoating to "smudge" when wiped if it is clean; both products should dry to a relatively hard surface finish. Are you sure you're not looking at a 30+ year collection of oil film and dirt? Try wetting a rag or paper towel with mineral spirits (paint thinner) and wiping the underside; if it's oil it should come off with a little coaxing causing minimal damage to the original "blackout". Of course, undercoating will also come off, but it will take considerably more effort. Don't use lacquer thinner; it will remove an oil film, but it will also take off the original blackout paint.
If really an undercoating, a previous owner may have added it to dampen noise or vibration from the hood or under the hood...it's just a guess, some of the stuff people did to these old cars was just plain stupid, but probably seemed right to them.- Top
