Boy, I'm impressed with the documentation listed in the Driveline ad for the documented 7,000 mile 63 ZO6 convertible talked about here last month. Sounds like proof they exist to me. If it is not a typo, $750,000 OBO and it is your's. I sure hope someone does an article for Restorer.

Re: I second that !!!
We have what is alleged to be a genuine fully-documented '64 Z06 convertible registered for our Michigan Chapter Meet next month, and I believe the owner is also taking it forward to the National in Windsor as well. Should be interesting.- Top

Re: 1963 ZO6 convertible
Bill,
GM decided as early as December of 62 that they intended to release the Z06 optioin for conv. They state that the option would be available immediately. (17 Dec. 1962) I Have GM documentation on this and if someone is willing to post it for us, I'll be happy to send it to them. Pretty interesting stuff.

This car was at the Zion Regional last
year on its first outing. It was my understanding that the car was on its way this year to both Bloomington and Windsor, but that may have changed. The documentation includes two letters from THE PLANT, advising that the order had been received and again advising when it was scheduled for build - this was becuase it was bought under the Employee Purchase Plan. The owner repeatedly complained about the brakes - to the extent that at 1800 miles or so, all four drums were replaced with the later version that had cooling holes in the drum.- Top

Banded drums ARE the correct drum for 63 Z06
The banded front brake drum was available as the ONLY 63 Z06 front drum from 1/63 on through GM parts. I bought a set of branded drums from the original Chevrolet dealership owner who removed them from a Feb 63 Z06, delived in March 63 after Daytona races. The Z06 eqipment was removed as was the rear split window so he could sell the car when 64s came out as a regular brake car with the new 1 piece window.Rear drums changed 3 imes between 1/63 and 7/63 and are the most difficult of any 63 Z06 part to find!- Top

Re: I second that !!!
When the big tank was unbundled from the first Z06 iteration (second iteration without the big tank was released about Feb 1, 1963) Z-06 was technically available on a Convertible, but as John said, this is the first '63 convertible that might have unequivocal documentation that it was built with Z-06 though several are claimed.
The big tank, N-03, was available as a separate option on Coupes since the beginning of the model year, so if you ordered after the second iteration of Z-06 was released and wanted the Z-06 big tank Coupe, you simply ordered N-03 along with Z-06. The price of the second iteration Z-06 reflected the unbundling of the big tank.
In 1964 Z-06 was unbundled - COMPLETELY! It was simply eliminated, but all its component systems/parts were available as separate options.
I refer to the handful of these models as "Z-06 equivalent '64s". There were considerably fewer built than '63 Z-06s.

Please let me know where my message
says anything about either "banded" or "branded" drums - what it states is that the drums the car was delivered with were replaced by a later iteration that had cooling holes in the centers - of course, they were banded.- Top

The Car's Owner Is A Member Of Our Chapter
The 63 Z06 convert being discussed belongs to a fellow Utah Bonneville NCRS chapter member. I had the priveledge of helping to judge this car during a chapter event last fall. You will not believe this car when you see it. The documentation alone is unbelievable. When he took posession of the car the soft top had never been up. The interior is simply amazing as well as the original black laquer paint. This is the REAL DEAL. How many 8000 mile midyears have you seen let alone a 63 Z06 convert? I believe that a driveline article is forth coming.

Re: The Car's Owner Is A Member Of Our Chapter
I sure hope it comes to Bloomington. Sure hope I can make it to Bloomington!I'd love to see this car. There's just no substitute for originality and there's so much to be learned from cars like this.- Top

Here we go- again!
RPO Z-06 is always an interesting topic. It's always been my understanding that all the HD fined drums had the cooling holes on the outside face, and all the major changes to the package during 1963 involved lining material.
