"Seat Saver" covers for vinyl seats

I am considering using "Seat Saver" covers over new white vinyl seats. Has anyone had a bad experience with using the tan or light gray covers on white seats in a car that is driven regularly? I'm concerned about the fabric color fading onto the white vinyl in a high heat/high humidity climate. Love that Houston weather!
    Best regards,
    Charlie

Where does it end? Won't you need covers to protect your seat protectors? Just sit on the seats like the General intended.

Some fabrics/material will bleed and discolor your seats from your body sweating. I've seen it many times (I'm an upholseterer) Cheap breathable covers will let the dust and dirt through. All covers have there good points and bad. My opinion is to not use covers over top of "white" seatcovers. Just clean and treat the seats with a good cleaner or a mild soap and damp cloth, then use a vinyl protectant: Vinylex, Armor all, Don't soak the seats with any of these products. Spray the cloth "shop towel or rag" then wipe the seats. This way you don't have the protectant soaking the threads of the seams and atracting dirt into the seams where you are unable to get it out unless you use a toothbrush. Sorry for the long post. Brian,

Why jump to conclusions? Maybe he just wants to avoid burning his legs and rear during those very hot Houston summers (and springs and falls for that matter).

          Amen!

Got a Barracuda S-package car for graduation from college that was my mother's under Chrysler Exec lease program. It had white vinyl seats and, as a guy, I 'cringed' at the maintenance chore of this 'lady' car....

But, after a year I discovered silver linings to the 'cloud'.... First, it was a real woman getter with white seats! Second, you did NOT burn your butt/legs when you sat down on the summer sun baked upholstery. Last, since the white vinyl showed dirt, you found yourself regularly cleaning the fabric and that turned out to be no big deal + with 'forced' periodic cleaning, the vinyl actually LASTED longer!

            Re: Armor-All

            Mike,
Thanks for your comments especially coming from an upholsterer. I was told Armor All is the worst thing you can put on vinyl because of the silicone content. Old Wife's tale? I am not familiar with Vinylex but do you think they are all the same . I currently use Meguires Vinyl protectant

Vinylex is made by the same co. that makes Lexol leather cleaner/care which is a very good leather product. I have used Lexol for many years on my saddlebags they were getting hard and dirty from years of riding in the weather. After using Lexol cleaner and leather care four times cleaning the leather, its back to being soft and pliable. A $30 kit saved me $500.00 for new bags. I prefer vinylex over Armor all. I spoke with a few suppliers of vinyls and they recommend not soaking the vinyl with armor all or any other cleaner, but put it on a clean rag and wipe the vinyl down. Then let it set on the vinyl for a couple minutes and wipe the seats down again with a clean cloth. That will give the seats a shine and protection, and the armor all or whatever you use doesn't soak into the vinyl. I have seen people use to much (armor all, etc.. every week twice a week) and it seems to cause the vinyl to seperate from the backing. You don't have to armor all your seats every weekend, once a month is fine. As far as a silicone base, I never got a straight answer. Just rewipe the seats after the first application. I just bought a bottle of Meguires to try it for my self so I don't know how it performs. Mike D 1787

                Randy,

ArmorAll is not recommended for collector or everyday cars for that matter because it builds up layers and collects dust, dirt, etc. (This may be subject to opinions, mainly mine and what I hear in conversations with collectors in NCRS, NCCC and AACA.) Silicone and all products containing it were banned from the GM Tech Center a LONG time ago according to Steve Koss. Meguires has excellent products as do Eagle and some others. After cleaning with gentle soap and water, and drying thoroughly, I like to use Lemon Pledge in my daily ride - makes it feel and small new again after ten years. My ten-year old '67 (white interior) restoration ocassionally receives a simple dusting with a very slightly damp soft cloth and it still looks fresh.

Research products for use on your vehicles to verify their contents and effects prior to experimenting. The gentler, the better. No sillycone!!!
