    spark plug heat shield fasteners

My 62 engine came with only 3 dish head bolts and no heat shields. I am putting new shields on.

The three bolts I have have 3 different captured washer styles. One had a split lock washer, the 2nd an external star washer and the 3rd an internal star washer.

The AIM has a great closeup with a pn 193938 bolt. An external star washer (114604)is shown on the other side of the spark plug wire bracket. This same bolt is used to hold on the RH rear spark wire bracket.

What style bolt should it be, any source markings and is the lock washer really on the other side of the support?

    thanks again.

      Re: External Star

thanks, but should this external star washer be captured on the bolt,

or on the engine block side with the spark plug wire holder between the washer and the bolt head like the AIM shows??

It does give the separate part number for the washer.

        heat shield fastener answer?

I think I can now answer my own question after trying to assemble and looking at a 63-67 Paragon catalog.

There should be a 2nd external star washer between the heat shield and the spark plug wire holder. Otherwise the heat shield can rotate because it is in between two very flat, slippery surfaces.

The fastener looks to be the same as what was used on the oil pan and timing chain cover. It should have the external star washer to keep the spark plug wire holder from rotating. I would think source could/would be different since the pan and cover were installed at the engine plant and the heat shields at the assembly plant.
