Hello. We will be replacing the bumpers on our `75 with urethane bumpers and will be searching for someone to paint them. We want to paint them as close to original as possible with what is available today. Just wondering if anyone would know what paint "recipe" I should tell the painter to use. About all I know is it was originally lacquer paint with a flexible additive. Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: C-3 Bumper Paint
Brian, if by "close to original as possible with what is available today", you mean you are planning to use urethane, then painting flexible parts is not a problem. Product bulletins will give you specific directions, but generally, you have to minimize the number of coats and use a flex agent in the paints.
You will probably use only one coat of primer, no primer-surfacer, and two coats of color mixed with a flex agent for the part to remain flexible after painting. In PPGs system, this would mean one coat of reduced DPLF primer followed by two coats of DCC single stage color with DX 814 Universal Flexibilizer. A top coat of DCU 2021 clear with flexibilizer is optional; if you're using it on the rest of the car, you probably want to use on the bumper as well.- Top

Agree!
If your painter isn't a 'fly by night' he should have thorough knowledge of what additives to blend with a given paint (based on mfgr recommendations) to make it flexible for urethane coverage/adhesion. About all he needs to know (and this is public domain info on the PPG web site; www.autocolorlibrary.com) is the factory original blend code for your car's color....- Top
