Re: photo posting test
Mark,
Your link below, is not a link to the picture, but to some kind of redirector script or counter or something. This is often used by the free photo gallery posting sites. This is part of their business model for making the site pay it's way. The program that runs the Technical Discussion Board needs to see a pure URL to the photo file on a server.
""
One of the best places to look at for hosting your pictures is at what most ISP's call your personal web space. Most ISP's offer a small area on their servers that you can post a few web pages on. You can also just upload the pictures and call that URL from the Optional Image URL.
Check the Help section, , for a list of some Photo Hosting sites that should work. Since they change from time to time, I make no guarantees.Administrator

Re: Photo Test.......John.......didn't work
John - I see the link works, but not the direct post. I am wondering if my Comcast 25M webspace can be used for a direct post. It has a login password, I wonder if there is a way to allow view access only overide? Craig- Top

Most of the "free" photo-hosting sites (the very few that are left) don't allow direct linking to hosted images with a "call" from within another outside site due to bandwidth issues (like using them to host eBay auction photos), but accept hyperlink access through ISP's from individual computers (unless the account is password-protected). Unrestricted outside site linking with no access bandwidth limitations generally requires a "paid" account. I pay $4.00/month for unlimited/unrestricted daily bandwidth access to up to 2500 images at www.villagephotos.com ; good service, no hassle, on-site tools for re-sizing and editing, etc. Most of the "free" sites went belly-up after everyone learned to use digital cameras and the bandwidth requirements for photo-hosting went out of sight.- Top

Re: Photo Test.......John.......didn't work
Thx John - that is a very reasonable cost, and I was wondering where you hosted your photos. I am wondering if my Comcast broadband service allows the link access, I know I have a 25M webstorage, but I am not sure if they allow unrestricted access without login first. I will have to check. If not, the villagephotos sounds like a great way to go......thx!.......Craig- Top

Re: Photo Test.......
Craig,
If you right click on the broken image you can see that it points to a jsp script to call up the picture. When you go to this link with your browser the jsp (Java) script assembles the page that you see.
That is the same way that the Techncial Discussion Board is served up. It it written on the fly by a cgi script. It reads your cookies and inserts your name in the welcome line, it then looks at the last messages posted and builds the threads that appear on this page.
Comcast does offer personal web hosting. I doubt you would run into any trouble with linking to photos on your web space. The instructions say they allow 25meg. That should be a lot of photos. With the number of hits from your exposure here at the NCRS Tech Board I don't think bandwidth will be any problem.
I couldn't pursue the instructions for setting up the web space without a logon and password, but comcast claims it is easy. I suspect that it wouldn't be hard to upload a few pictures and see if you can see them in your browser. Just following the link that comcast should provide.

Re: Photo Test.......THX John!!!!
Comcast recently revised the way they let you set up home web pages. They supposedly made it easier, which it is but I cannot figure out how to upload a picture anymore. So I am using Photodex to store photos. Hopefully everyone is seeing them.

Re: Photo Test.......THX John!!!!
Thx Chris, I went to Comcast website last night and did find a way to share a single picture, but not a way to openly share all pictures without passwords from what I can tell. They use some outfit called Snapfish now......I am totally wasting my 25M storage and not using it at all at the moment.......Craig- Top

Re: Photo Test.......THX John!!!!
Craig,
You don't want to go to the photo sharing link at Comcast. You need to go to the Personal Web Page site.
Most services set these up as This would be your web space directory.
You then upload your picture to the webspace via FTP or probably their web building software. Just as you would upload a web page you upload the jpg or gif file.
The link then would be You should be able to store a good number of pictures on 20meg of space.Administrator
