I have a South Dakota 1959 Plate I want to use on my 1959 when I get it restored. Anyone have any helpful hints on restoring the plate? It has black numbers but a reflective white paint on the base. Also a decale of the state moto on the base color. Thanks Tom

Re: C1 License Plate Restoration
I did my 1966 Virginia plates which are black backround with white letters. I used spray can laquer from Home Depot (I don't remember the brand) and it matched the original color perfect. The Virginia plates did not use reflective paint. Good luck. - P.J.- Top

Re: C1 License Plate Restoration
Any reproduction plate used on a motor vehicle made by anyone other than the issuing state is illegal. Why chance getting your prized possession impounded by the the police who use "Low Bid Bubbas Towing".

Re: C1 License Plate Restoration
check with your state DMV, most can be accessed online. Here in NY, for vintage (original) plates you are not supposed to alter (paint, touch up) the plates. You have to sign a form saying you have not done this but the only inspection done of them is you send a photo of the plates to the main NY DMV office so no noe REALLY sees it in person. (DMV rep told me no one really cares but just be aware). By the way I got my vintage NY plates from "TAGS R US" and was happy with the pair they sent me. NOS original plates in brand new (NOT restored) condition for about $120. A bit pricey but worth it for me...........

Re: C1 License Plate Restoration
I purchased a brand (?) new set of 2 NOS 1965 Texas plates from
For more information, contact me at 800-556-3598 days eastern time Thanks for the inquiry Tom Smith PO Box 238 Goochland, VA 23063

The State of Texas made copy of plate and issued me a metal tag to attach to front plate so I can use them legally. Tom has a lot of plates for sale. He is a member of a national org. of lis plate colletors.
The fellow I mentioned above as having a new plate made had the old plate underneath the new plate on the front of his vette. So he was sort of legal I guess.- Top

Before you spend the $$$
If you intend to register the car with that plate, as is allowed in many states, let me entertain you with my story. I searched for and bought a "model year of manufacture" plate for my 1956 Corvette. The Missouri state license law allows the car to be registered with this plate AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH CURRENT LICENSE NUMBER SEQUENCING. Since it was six digits and current MO plates use three digits and three letters I thought I was okay. After sending in registration info I got all paperwork returned and registration rejected because six digits interferes with Commercial Vehicle registration sequencing. I found another plate, one letter, a digit, dash and three digits. Checked with them first this time. Motorcycle sequence! Unfortunately, MO has no information generally available on what's acceptable. I have since found one that I can use: one letter, two digits, dash and three digits. Just make sure you're not falling into the same trap I originally did if you intend to license your car with the historic plate.- Top
