My speedometer is 'bouncing', and not giving a correct (it's low) reading. How do I diagnose and remedy the problem?

Re: Speedometer Bouncing
Did this just start? I'm guessing it's a muncie. If so it's probably just a worn plastic speedo gear.
If this problem has been ongoing and you know what rear end gear ratio you have post it look it up and or check your current gear. Also the speedometer cable should be entering the passengers side tailshaft.
I've found many cars (mine included)have had the same problem from new owners because they have found out the tailshaft and steel drive gear was not orignal for that car and it's rear end.
I hope this just happened. I went out and purchased ever plastic gear they make. The dead give away besides my posting the tranny tailshaft and box numbers which were not correct for the car was the speedometer cable on the wrong side.
If you want to know what year box you have post the gear box and tailshaft numbers for your records. You'll get a reply. Good luck,grr#33570- Top
