    '65 396 "B&H" Bolt Headmarks

Can someone please tell me if I will get a deduct for using my original hexhead "B&H" oil pan bolts? The headmark is 3 concentric circles with "B&H" in the middle. The JM doesn't reference a bolt headmark for these and I believe these to be original to the car as I have observed these headmarks elsewhere on the car undisturbed. I know a common mark was "L" along with several others, but there is hardly ever mention of B&H. Also, does someone know the correct headmark for the timing chain cover on the 396? Again, the JM does not provide referrence to that.

Thank you in advance for the words of wisdom.

    John,

B&H bolts are common during the mid-years and nobody should deduct for them. The reason for not including the bolts in the Judging Manual is because there were so many different suppliers for the timing chain cover bolts and the same ones were used on the oil pan. As long as there is a reasonable number of the "same" headmarks you should not suffer a deduction. Also, I'm sure that the judges are looking for the same configuration such as recessed head and captured washer, etc.

    Regards,

    JR

Thanks for the reply. The headmarks for my timing chain cover are what I would describe as 3/4 of a complete circle within the hexhead. Is this also a correct headmark?

      Thanks,
      John

          John,

The bolts on your timing cover are just like the general intended. From any supplier that fits the general specification for configuration and hardness.

Enjoy that 65 and share that 396 with us at some NCRS meet.

          Regards,

          JR

            Bill:

Good to hear from you. I guess you could say my timing chain cover bolts are indeed a large "C" should've probably recognized it that way. My pan bolts were the "B&H" headmark on the larger bolts but the two smaller ones at the front corners at the reinforcement tabs were the "-L-" headmark. Unfortunately one of these bolts broke when disassembling the engine and I'm at a loss to find a match to it as the repro-bolt kits usually come with the "TR" headmark for these two bolts--and they are not the recessed type. If you or anyone knows a source for this one bolt please let me know. If not, it will make for an interesting "haystack" find at Carlisle.

Thank you for the post and you can be sure you will hear the thunder down the road at an NCRS meet when it's finished.

Check Paragon for part #1850 "L" oil pan bolt.
