My 66 Corvette is a small block 327/350 HP L-79 engine with the correct oil filter canister and filter. I have a spin-on filter adapter that I would like to install so I can do easy oil change (since I am not planning to have the car judged in the near future). I need to know the procedure for installing this adapter. The adapter measurements: (1) On the side towards the engine ..4" OD and the rim is 3/32" wide. There are 8 holes equally spaced around the inside of the casting on approx. 2 15/16" centers; two are 5/16" diam and the other (6) are 1/4" dia. There is a felt ring gasket set in a groove which measures 1 3/4" diam x 1/4-5/16" wide. The part No. is 20063-G. (2)The opposite side has the threaded male end for the spin-on filter (about 1/2" high and 3/4" OD. The Outer Diam. is approx. 3 3/4" and the inner diam. is 3 1/8". This is the edge that the spin-on filter and gasket contacts when installed. My question is: Do I have to remove the current casting that the oil canister fits against. (There are two bolts that appear to hold it in place) and install the spin-on adapter in its place? ...OR... does this spin-on adapter bolt against the current casting? Which holes do I use and should I use the same bolts that are currently installed? Are there gaskets necessary or what?? HELP!! Thanx in advance for any help here. Dick #31008

Re: 1966 Spin-on Oil Filter Adapter
Dick,
I just did the conversion on my 65 this past week. I had to sit and look at the new piece to figure out which way it went.
You DO have to remove the current piece off the block. The adapter should have come with a pair of LONGER bolts to mate it to the block. The other thing I did was use some Permatex in addition to the gasket between the block and the adapter.
Mine also had several holes for the bolts- 2 larger ones are used only on the big blocks- Just spin the adapter till two of the smaller wholes line up.
If you need it- I'll be glad to send over a pic in the morning when I'm back under the car.
