    C1: Master brake cilinder rebuild

    Hi all,

Does anyone know a good master brake cilinder rebuild service. I just bought one via e-Bay but I want it restored and rebuild before I let it be send to the Netherlands. Please provide name and address (preferable with e-mail address as well) so I can arrange it with all parties involved.

    thanks for your help (again),
    Rob Musquetier

White Post Restorations or Apple hudraulics will both brass sleeve the master cylinder. Apple will also just sleeve it if you want to rebuild the cylinder yourself, while white post will only perform the whole job. You are looking at $80 or so for the sleeving, and $150-195 for the complete rebuild at their service.

Give Brake and Equipment Warehouse, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn 612-378-3141 a call. They did mine ($54) with a stainless steel sleeve and they offer club members a discount. I bought a rebuild kit and did the rest myself, but they may do the whole nine yards.

          All,

Thanks for the help! I'll contact some of these vendors and see if I can work it out with all the shipment hassle. (Send it from the seller to the rebuilder and let the rebuilder send it to the Netherlands).

          greetings,

Your price estimates are very accurate which leads me to a question I've had for quite some time. Why does it cost so much for them to slap in a rebuild kit after it's resleeved. I haven't done a master cylinder in 20 years but it seems to me it was very easy to do. Clearly I'm missing something. Why so expensive? (I'm getting ready to send mine out so I'm very curious to hear the comments.)

David - I agree, which is why I used Apple to sleeve the cylinder and I am rebuilding my own. I attribute it purely to the consumer wanting a turnkey job that they bolt in. If you figure their labor is $70 and hour, they are charging about an hour of labor, the minumum charge for just about anything automotive, plus the kit....Craig

By the way, tell them NOT to paint the cylinder with cast blast....maybe they will listen. I did, and still ended up stripping it off with lacquer thinner. It is really hard to get remote folks to carry your notes and wishes to the actual person when the operation is performed, if it is out of the ordinary. However, the actual sleeving was an excellent job.....I have some photos I can email of the internal bore as delivered by Apple if you want to email me. I need to get a photo hosting site set up so I can share them here.....Craig

Thanks for the comments Craig. I agree with your conclusions. I'll have them resleeve and I'll rebuild and use the money for beer.
