Correct GM Spec lubricant for C3

In my service manual, several references are made to GM Specification GM 6031M, whether it is discussing wheel bearings or chassis lubricants. Does this spec cover one lubricant for multiple uses or one spec for multiple lubricants??

Basically, it covers BOTH. The 6031M spec is just that------a set of specifications to which a grease must conform if it is approved for a particular application. Any grease manufacturer can perform tests on their product to see if it conforms to the GM spec. If it does, they may label the grease as conforming to that spec although they often do not since there are so many different specs to which their product may conform.

In general, the 6031M specification is used for MANY different grease applications on GM cars. And, there are many different grease products out there that conform to it.

Thanks Joe. I ran a search trying to find the spec itself, but turned up nothing. My main goal is understanding the difference between chassis lube, body lube, cable guide lubes etc. and what common lube I can use to apply in all cases, and what specific lubricants I need such as wheel bearing grease (which that much I remember), as I am starting from scratch on the reassembly of everything, and I do mean everything. Whatever tricks/info I had as a "kid" on this issue is long gone with my hair and brain cells. All I can remember is engine oil, heavy gear oil, light machine oil, and axle grease.....and of course - beer. My 30 year absence of knuckle busting has become painfully obvious once again, though I kept in touch with the "beer" lubricant part pretty well. The service manual isn't very clear on all of the lubricants involved, other than saying all shall meet the aforementioned spec requirements.

        Dave------

GM #12377985 is just about as close a you can get to a "universal" grease for your car. It is approved for just about all applications EXCEPT front wheel bearings (it is, however, approved for Corvette REAR wheel bearings). It supercedes and replaces most earlier GM greases for specific applications. For front wheel bearings (and, REAR wheel bearings as far as I'm concerned) you need to use a grease which meets GM spec 1051344. GM PART #1051344 (available in 1# TUB only) defines the spec and Valvoline Synpower Synthetic and Semi-synthetic greases meet the spec, too.

Thank you so much for the info. The Valvoline semi-synthetic is what I bought for the wheel bearings, mainly for the higher temperature rating over the Synpower. I'll try the "universal" for the rest of my needs. Add another jewel to your crown Sir.
