    65 Voltage Regulator Mounting

A while back I replaced my voltage regulator on my 65 with a restored original unit. I also purchased new mounting hardware. However, I cannot seem to get it mounted correctly. The assembly manual shows that the 3 threaded rubber bushings fit through the fiberglass. However, my bushings are too big to fit through the existing holes in the fiberglass. I have tried pushing them through from the engine comparment and through the wheel well with no success. Anyone have any advice on this?

as one tightens the 3 fastners on the 3 rubber bushings, they swell via compression and grasp the hole in the fiberglass. assume you don't have fsteners threaded into , compressing and swelling the bushings. if not and they still don't fit the hole, i'd check holes ID and their location as perhaps a previous owner drilled a replacement inner skirt. If the holes are just a tad small in diameter, and you're certain of correct location on the skirt, then take a die grinder and a rotary bit and enlarge the holes . good luck, m ike

If memory serves, the GM PN for the well nuts used to mount the v-reg changed somewhere in the late '65/66 time frame. Could well be there were two different sizes as well nuts come in different configurations based on OD of the well, size of captive nut within the well and thickness of the well nut's upper lip. Those used to mount luggage racks are 'special' in that they have a very thin upper lip. Perhaps what was supplied to you for mounting the v-reg was an 'omnibus' set of well nuts based on '66 and later version of the GM PN's....

Thanks. That does make sense as the inner fender is original and untouched. Also, the parts suppliers all have the well nuts as a generic part for 64-67 (and beyond). You would think they would have a note on that in their catalogs. I wasn't too thrilled about drilling out the holes so I elected to cut the well nut. I used a razor blade and cut the head of the well nut off, turning it a regular grommet. I then installed the two halves of the well nut on the inside and outside of the inner fender. With the shoulder bolt tightened, you can't even tell that the well nut was cut!

        Thanks for the advice!

The well nuts used for luggage racks are much larger in diameter than the one used on the regulators. I think a correct nut will fit.

I have used the GM well nuts in several 64-67 cars with no problems. The only thing that is unique about the GM version vs the Auveco well nuts are the threads. 10-32 vs 10-24

I had John Pirkle rebuild my original v-reg for my 65'. He supplied me with new rubber inserts as well......706-860-9047. GREAT GUY !!
