Where '58s that were "black" painted Onyx Black or Tuxedo Black? In the "Corvette Specifications Guide - John Amgwert", it indicates Tuxedo if the body was painted black but Onyx if the cove was painted black. It would seem that they would have used one or the other black for both cases. I'm assuming Onyx Black and Tuxedo Black are slightly different in color since '58 Onyx is Ditzler DAL-9200 verses '59 Tuxedo shows as Ditzler DDL-9300. Is this a valid assumption? Also in they list a combo # in the book. So far mine appears to have originally been black with silver coves which would have been combo #507. Was this written any where on the body? Thanks, Ted

Re: Ted: Black be black... No cove I.D...
Ted,
Noland Adams book refers to Charcoal for early and just black for the second series. He states "Only one Corvette has been located and documented with a black body, serial number 108784". There is no place the number code was written with the exception of, possibly, on the cardboard divider in the trunk.
SO, Black with silver coves should be considered correct.(great choice)
I'm like you, I would like to see some known good paint codes from the experts.

Re: Ted: Black be black... No cove I.D...
Larry, I have '58 #9128 and it appears to have been originally black (vs charcoal) with silver coves. It also had charcoal interior but all of the painted surfaces that would normally be charcoal are painted black (console, cluster, kick panels, heater cover, inside trunk, etc). All of the vinyl and steering wheel were charcoal. Other than the seat covers the original pebble grain vinyl was still in place. Here's a pic of the grease pencil marking.

Re: Now there are two!
Ted,
More than two. I had 58 SN 9104 and it was black with silver and a red interior. Had it top flighted in 92 at Joplin.
Remove the rear cardboard divider in the trunk and use a quarter to scrape on the fiberglass that would be behind the passengers seat. Mine said BLACK in green grease just like the posted pic.

When Noland and I spent all day scraping Corvettes at Lanny Johnson's wrecking yard I mean about 50 Corvettes in the 80's we found colors , Hart top and soft top markings and you name it. I wrote our finding in what was SACE and got many 58 owners having Black as original.- Top
