C2 Oil Filter Update & Question

I've done a lot of work on cars but this stuck oil filter may take the cake as one of the most difficult, believe it or not. The entire exterior skin was eventually removed leaving only the very top mating surface plate. That thing was hit so many times with a chisel as I peeled that thick top plate of the filter back that I'm still amazed it never budged. Only after my third attempt with a propane torch did the rubber gasket and some type of sealant burn off and finally freed itself. I'll never know what was used but that gasket/sealer combination must have created a vacuum of monumental proportion. Just glad it's off - so is everyone that's come in contact with me the last 24 hours.

Next question: I'm going to return it to the correct cannister and filter insert. After taking off the adapter for the spin-on type filter, what remains is shown below. It looks to me like I'm missing something. I thought I remembered some type of a spring loaded check valve or the like. All help appreciated. Thanks

You have the part you need. The bypass valve is part of this assembly. You will note the round valve retainer within the inner circumference. There is a spring beneath this. There is a gasket which installs between this assembly and the block. You can make a formed-in-place gasket, though, using one of the Permatex products. I believe that the gaskets are also available from auto parts stores or reproduction sources.

      David:

In your earlier post, I advised you to smack it fore/aft with a ball peen hammer. This distorts the steel base you were trying to chisel loose. When it distorts the gasket flange, it breaks loose the rubber from the adaptor and saves you the trouble of heating it with a torch. Works everytime! Maybe next time.

I learned this little tidbit in a Ford assembly plant many years ago.

Believe me Mike, I hit that thing fore, aft, left and right with a hammer before I went to the chisel. It was just one stick can. I do appreciate the advise and I'm just thrilled everything is back together including the new FelPro oil pan gasket the correct filter cannister and everything is as dry as a bone.
