My 1967 327/300 has just started backfiring thru the exhaust on acceleration only. It seems to be confined to the left side of the exhaust system. Any suggestions as to where I look--fuel (seems OK),timing, condenser, exhaust valve spring?? I was on my way to a club event this morning and had to turn back as the car was undriveable, was I embarassed to show up in a Cavalier!

Re: C2 Backfire Thru Exhaust
The correct term is "afterfire". Backfire is when it spits back through the carburetor.
The first step would be a compression or leakdown test as this condition is commonly caused by a burned valve especially if it only occurs on one bank. If the compression/leakdown numbers are okay the ignition system should be thoroughly inspected and tested including the spark plug wires.
If both the above prove okay, the carburetor is suspect.

Don,
You haven't been messing around with the spark plug wires and accidentally got two of them switched, have you?
A broken valve spring might also be a possibility, but you should find that when you perform the leakdown check that Duke is suggesting.
Good luck,
