    Amp Meter Replacement

The amp meter on my 65 coupe quit working yesterday. I have trouble shot it to the gauge. I think I can remove and replace the gauge without pulling the instrument cluster. Could anyone confirm this before I start and if so is there any hints that might make the replacement easier. As always, thank you for any advice.

    Bill,

There are some other posts on this in the archives, but you definitely can remove the ammeter without pulling the entire cluster if you are reasonably flexible. Get some threaded rod the same thread size as the 5 screws holding the cluster in place. Cut the rod into approx. 5 inch lengths. Replace the cluster screws with the threaded rod. You can then pull the cluster out a few inches and it will be supported on the rods. Before pulling the cluster, you may have to remove the 2 screws holding the bracket/escutcheon sp? the steering column passes through and loosen the nuts attaching the steering column or "mast jacket" to the dash such that you can lower the steering column to gain extra clearance for the cluster. I also recommend removing the driver's seat (takes only a few minutes) to have a nice flat surface to lie on. After removing the light switch (check your service manual) you can access the screws holding the fuel/ammeter assembly in place

I replaced the firewall insulation in my 1964 coupe over the weekend (what a PITA!) went through all of the above steps (plus many, many more). I need to replace my ammeter evenutally and saw that it definitely is possible to get at the ammeter without removing the entire cluster (not something I am keen on doing either).

    Good luck!
