I purchased a replacement master cylinder for my 58 and would like to know what type of finish, if any, should be used on the outside. Thanks.

Re: 1958 C1 Master Cylinder Finish
Ken, I would expect the front and inboard side of the master cylinder to show the engine compartment black-out paint and the outbord side to have the cast iron natural appearance due to it's installation on the firewall before the black-out process.- Top

Re: 1958 C1 Master Cylinder Finish
Terry,
Actually, if I remember some photos correctly, The M/C was mounted to the brake line and went down the line with the chassis and not the body. I think that the M/C did not get attached until the body drop.

Re: 1958 C1 Master Cylinder Finish
Terry,
I am just going by the pics on page 126 abd 144 in Nolans book of the chassis right before body drop, and both of them show the M/C hanging from the brake line. They may have changed in later years, but there no more pics in Noland book of a front view of a body drop after the 57 model year.

Re: 1958 C1 Master Cylinder Finish
Interesting. That's what I like about this pastime, another little mystery to unravel. An aquaintance of mine is doing a frame-off on a very low mileage, unmolested, '58. I'll see if his M/C has blackout paint underneath and report back.- Top

Re: 1958 C1 Master Cylinder Finish
The master cylinder was always part of the chassis prior to body drop, so the brake system could be bled and pressure-tested on the Chassis Line; it just hung on the main brake line until after body drop, when it was pulled rearward and attached to the firewall pedal support studs.- Top
