    Trip odometer reset - 1965

Anyone have any experience repairing a trip odometer? My odometer and trip odometer work fine as far as rolling with the miles. However, I cannot reset the trip odometer. I have checked the reset button and cable and can't find any issues, so it appears to be an internal problem in the trip odometer itself. The dash is in excellent original condition and all other gauges work fine, so I would like to avoid the expense of sending in the entire dash for a rebuild. I haven't been able to find any rebuild kits or instructions on the procedure. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Don,

You have to push in on the reset knob and turn to reset the trip odometer. If it won't reset the cable may be broken or loose at the instrument cluster. If your odo and trip work there is not much that can go wrong unless it's in the cable or the reset gear is stripped or broken.

    Regards,

    JR

I removed the cable and it appeared to be in good condition. The end moved freely and firmly while pushing and turning the reset knob. When installed pushing and turning the knob has no effect on the trip. I think you may be right about a reset gear being stripped or broken. I just don't know how to fix it without sending the whole dash in for repair. Would like to do it myself if possible.

      Thanks!

This is what the unit inside the Speedo looks like. When you push on the cable the gear you see in the top unit pushes up and disengages the speedometer gear and you can rotate the cylinders (if that makes sense). The parts you see here is from Corvette Specialties of Maryland and are not cheap, but are not outrageous.

        Good luck.

        Dave

Thanks for the help! The picture was very helpful. I'll check with Corvette Specialties on the parts. It's gotta be cheaper than sending the whole dash in for a rebuild!

The internal gears are available from Dr. Rebuild.
There is an article at CorvetteFAQ.com on how to replace the gears.
This is one of my 2004 summer projects.
