    63 heater y duct

I can't seem to find a used or repo 63 y duct and I figure I will either have to adapt a 64 or make one completley. Does anyone out there know the difference between the two. I am sure the lower half must be the same so it could possibly be the mounting mouth that fits onto the heater assembly. If anyone has had experience with this a heads up would be appreciated. Larry,

    You have it backwards...

The upper half that mates with the heater box is the same and the lower part is different.

The 64 - 67 piece has about a 1 inch extension on the drivers side outlet whereas the 63 piece is flush.

I suppose you could make a 63 from a later duct, but I'd just wait for a 63 piece to show up on eBay. They do from time to time.

    good luck,
    tc

      Re: 63 heater y duct

      Larry,

There are two different Y ducts used on 63 heater boxes. The first is square front and back where the duct attaches to the heater box. The second is square in the back but cut on a angle in the front where it attaches to the heater box because of a redesign of the cable attachment at the defroster door.

Both Y ducts use a snout (duct) on the drivers side just above the Y duct to direct heat to the foot area of the driver. I think there are two or three versions of this part and the snout and Y duct are unique to 63. If you have a 63 AIM check the C60 section as I think there is a picture of this set up. You will need to see what style heater box you have to determine the Y duct and snout that is correct.

The extensions as Tracy stated are the same length unlike 1964 /67 which is different. I hope this helps out, Tim

        63 heater y duct

Thanks Tim and Tracy for your responses. I just read Michael Haluska's article in the Corvette Restorer Volume 29 Number 4 Spring 2003 on constructing a 63 Y-Duct. My question is - would it be easier to convert a 64-67 to fit the 63? Do you know if the width in the console is the same? If it is just a question of plugging or redirecting air flow on one side it sounds easier than what Michael undertook. Thanks in advance. Larry Boden

          Larry,

I believe the widths are the same. Mine is 6.5 wide between the interface surfaces that mount between the radio panels.

I'd think converting a later duct to this configuration would be easy enough. They aren't judged other than there should not be an outlet extension hanging out past the driver side radio panel.

I had the privilege to OJ interior on 63/64's at the Breckenridge regional last week. This really wasn't even discussed because the 3 cars we looked at were correct.

          good luck,
          tc
